About Us

Pen-y-Cwm is a day school for pupils aged three to nineteen years who have a range of severe learning difficulties and in a number of cases profound and multiple learning difficulties. Many of the pupils have additional difficulties such as physical and/or sensory impairment or have autistic spectrum disorder. Some pupils have significant medical difficulties and need full or part-time nursing support throughout the school day. There are currently 102 pupils on roll. At Pen-y-Cwm School, we believe that each pupil should have the opportunity to learn and develop to the full within an environment where they are happy, supported and challenged to achieve as much as possible. We believe that every child has the right to an education of high quality and seek to create an environment where everyone is valued, whatever their ability. The school attracts pupils not only from Blaenau Gwent but from neighbouring authorities of Torfaen, Monmouthshire, Newport and Merthyr Tydfil. The school was inspected by Estyn in July 2010 and was deemed to be a happy and caring school, which addresses the needs of its pupils well. The report highlighted an outstanding quality in the curriculum offered to its pupils and the good standards of achievement and continued progress made by all learners. It also recognised outstanding features throughout the provision of care, support and guidance for learners across all key stages. The school has recently relocated to a fantastic, purpose built, twenty-first century school building, co-located with a mainstream 3-16 learning campus on what previously was the Hotmill production line of the Corus Steelworks site in Ebbw Vale. The new site offers outstanding opportunities for pupils in all key stages, having truly remarkable resources and facilities to offer, supporting a committed and highly skilled staff team in delivering high quality teaching and learning.
