Teacher of Geography and Humanities: Permanent, Full Time – MPR-UPR

An opportunity has arisen to join the Humanities department at Brimsham Green School on a full-time basis. We are seeking to appoint an experienced teacher of Geography; the experience of having also taught Sociology will be advantageous.

Suitably skilled, experienced and motivated candidates should be aware that we will be appointing to a whole school TLR position as Head of Sixth Form in the very near future; candidates interested in this additional responsibility are invited to take the opportunity to discuss this at interview.

Brimsham Green is a Local Authority maintained, 11-19 community secondary school. On site, a Resource Base with 13 planned places caters to students with physical disabilities and complex medical health care needs; students are fully included and access their curriculum provision alongside their peers. Post-16 teaching is collaboratively delivered with two neighbouring schools, collectively forming Cotswold Edge Sixth Form, a soft federation; students access their learning across all three sites as the teaching is shared.

We provide education to a cohort of around 1,050 students across KS3-KS5. Children at Brimsham Green are excited to learn and are real ambassadors for our community, benefitting from a hugely positive and supportive learning environment. We believe in, and model, relational and restorative approaches.

We were externally judged to be ‘Good’ by Ofsted in May 2019. It was noted that, ‘Governors and leaders share a clear vision for the school, based on the raising of expectations and pupils’ aspirations. Leaders are reflective, honest and committed to improving the academic standards that pupils reach …there is a palpable optimism and a positive climate of mutual trust and respect. Leaders genuinely believe that ‘better never stops.'‘

The humanities faculty is well-led, and leadership is distributed between the Head of Department and the Second in Department who has responsibility for Key Stage 3. You will be joining a team of experienced teachers, several of whom have additional senior and middle leadership roles in school.

At KS4, many students choose to study humanities subjects. The KS3 curriculum prepares students for these qualifications by emphasising an investigative approach to learning, and developing the skills and subject knowledge to enable them to excel. The department's goal is for all students to develop a deep understanding of all humanities subjects in KS3 and for the majority to want to pursue their humanities learning further.

The uptake of humanities subjects at A-Level is very strong, an indicator of the engagement in learning instilled in students throughout KS3 and KS4. Brimsham Green works in partnership with two other local schools as part of Cotswold Edge, a collaborative sixth form, serving the needs of students locally. A-Level History, Geography, Economics and Sociology are currently all taught at Brimsham.

Should you decide that you would like to join the staff team here at Brimsham, challenging and supporting our enthusiastic learners, then we look forward to reading your completed application form. Within your supporting statement, in the ‘Skills, abilities, knowledge, and experience’ section, please address the following points:

1. How have you successfully supported disadvantaged students to make good progress?

2. How do you ensure that all students in your lessons can make links to prior learning?

3. How do you enable all students in your lessons to transfer knowledge to their long-term memory?

The closing date for this post is 9:00 a.m. on Monday, 30th October 2023, however applications will be processed as they are received and therefore applicants are encouraged to apply early.

If you are interested and would like to discuss the post further or visit the school, please don't hesitate to contact us.
