About Us

Elmfield School for Deaf Children is a very special place. Our school is dedicated to promoting high achievement and learning for life. Our children and young people are immersed in a rich language community to thrive socially and in their learning. Central to our school is the use of bilingualism as our approach to teaching Deaf children which combines both British Sign Language (BSL), the language of the Deaf community, and English, the language of the hearing community. We value these languages equally and want our children to become equally fluent in both. Through assisting our children in becoming bilingual the aim is that they are comfortable in both deaf and hearing communities.

Ethos & Values

Every child at Elmfield School has the opportunity to study and use BSL. As well as supporting their language acquisition, BSL allows all deaf children and adults to communicate easily with each other and forms part of their Deaf identity.

Elmfield School for Deaf Children is a learning community where deaf Children can Connect, Belong and Succeed:

- Connect to the world through developing their languages of English and British Sign Language.

- Belong to a community which supports the development of strong personal values and self-esteem as a deaf learner in a hearing world.

- Succeed through our connected and enhanced curriculum, as a deaf person with character, confidence and resilience to lead a full and happy life and contribute to society.

We believe children fulfil their linguistic potential through exposure to a language rich environment. We have a welcoming and inclusive school community that values all of its members. We engage the deaf and hearing communities to collaborate and enrich the lives of our students. Deaf adults are involved throughout the school community, including our governing body. Deaf children have the right to become confident, curious, reflective and creative learners. Our students should leave school as resilient, kind and independent young people prepared to lead a successful role in society.

We aim to:

- Provide a language rich environment that promotes excellent language development in both English and British Sign Language

- Deliver a stimulating, varied, spiral curriculum that provides individualised pathways for a range of learners

- Develop a positive deaf identity and self-esteem

- Prepare children for the next stage of life

- Provide equal access and inclusivity for all curriculum areas

- Develop and support the mental health and well-being of all students
