About Us

HMC (The Heads’ Conference) is a thriving, proactive association of heads at some of the world’s leading independent schools. The name of the association derives from its annual meeting at Conference, which is a condition of membership.

Founded in 1869, HMC was the world’s first association for headteachers and currently consists of over 300 members in the British Isles – educating more than 270,000 pupils – and around 50 further members across the globe.

The aims of HMC

The association’s aims are to serve and support our members, to represent their views and to exemplify excellence in education. In particular, HMC seeks to:

  • help members and their schools grow and develop;
  • promote and protect the independence of HMC schools;
  • encourage and share innovation in HMC schools and more widely;
  • promote the discussion of national and international educational issues; and
  • inform policy and public opinion with regard to the independent sector.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

At HMC we are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion amongst our team, members, schools and wider communities.

The association’s dedicated Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group exists to promote equal opportunities for all those working in HMC schools regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic background, disability or any other protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.

We recognise that schools, in common with other organisations, are working hard to be communities where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is expected, and equity is genuinely achieved.

The HMC EDI Working Group comprises members and other senior leaders in schools. It provides advice and assistance to HMC schools, gathering best practice from across the membership and more widely, gaining understanding from expert practitioners. The group also supports a large network of EDI leads within HMC schools.
