Qualification requirements for Overseas Trained Teachers "OTTs"
Qualified teacher status (QTS) is a legal requirement in maintained schools in England. Most teachers in academies and free schools also have QTS.
From 1 February 2023, teachers who have trained overseas in the following countries can apply for QTS in the UK, so that they can work as a qualified teacher as soon as they arrive:
- Australia
- Canada
- the EEA
- Gibraltar
- Hong Kong
- New Zealand
- Northern Ireland
- Scotland
- Ukraine
- the USA
In addition, teachers with a subject specialism in languages, mathematics or science and a teaching qualification to teach 11-16-year-olds from the following 7 countries will be able to check whether they meet the requirements for QTS and apply:
- Ghana
- India
- Jamaica
- Nigeria
- Singapore
- South Africa
- Zimbabwe
To be awarded QTS as an overseas trained teacher, you must complete an ENIC (European Network of Information Centres) check (formerly known as NARIC). This is a process to check that the qualifications you hold are comparable to UK qualifications, and that your degree was completed in English. You can obtain a Statement of Comparability by applying online and providing your qualification documents.
Those who are not eligible to apply for QTS can complete initial teacher training once they arrive in England or apply for IQTS (International Qualified Teacher Status). IQTS is a new teaching qualification backed by the government which leads to the automatic award of QTS before you reach the UK. You can train where you live and work, with no need to visit the UK, but you will need to complete your training before you begin the relocation process. Those accepted to complete IQTS do not need to complete the induction period, so QTS status will be fast-tracked.
