About Us

Location Hawthorn is a single site 11 – 18 co-educational secondary school situated at the southern end of Pontypridd, 10 miles north of the city of Cardiff. The school has immediate access to the A470 dual carriageway and M4 motorway, the main arterial routes of SE Wales. The school buildings are situated on a green field site, close to the River Taff, with extensive playing fields / leisure areas. A joint use swimming pool, Astroturf, youth centre and community education facility are also housed on site. Catchment Currently, the school has a population of approximately 820 pupils, a large proportion of whom stay on into Sixth Form. Projected rolls remain steady with pupils admitted from five main partnership primary schools. All socio-economic groups are represented with approximately 27% of pupils being entitled to free school meals. Less than 2% of pupils are drawn from minority ethnic groups with English being the predominant home language of the large majority of pupils. Staffing & Resources The school has a teaching force of 51 staff giving a ratio of 1:15. The senior staff are made up of a Headteacher, 2 Acting Deputy Headteachers,1 Senior Assistant Headteacher and 1 Acting Assistant Headteacher and a large team of support staff work hard to ensure teaching colleagues can focus on teaching and learning. Facilities include purpose built ICT and music rooms, a multimedia centre and dedicated Sixth Form study areas. Nearly all teaching departments / subject staff have base rooms. The most recent school inspection report ( Mar 2014) is very favourable and is available on the Estyn Web site. School Standards The mission statement of the school is ‘Health, Happiness, Success’ The main summary of the inspection included: Hawthorn high School has improved year on year since the previous inspection and is now a very good school. Its students achieve well, most noticeably at the end of Key Stage 4 where, in 2007, they achieved exceptionally high standards in the GCSE examinations. The school’s provision for students’ care, guidance and support has many outstanding features.
