Overview

The aim of our website is to give you an insight into the school and should prove to be an informative tool whether you are a parent or guardian, student, prospective Heolddu parent or a prospective member of staff. In January we were thrilled with the performance of our GCSE mathematics results where 83% of pupils passed their GCSE, 20% of these passes were at A or A* level. These are hardworking students, who received record breaking results. We are very proud of them. Educating children is a great responsibility and privilege. As adults we wish our children to develop into confident, successful and positive young people. At Heolddu, we aim to offer an education that will enable our students to do just this and flourish as individuals, achieve academic success and acquire the skills they will need in the future.  Our motto is “Opportunity for All” and throughout school life we aim for all students, staff and parents to work together to ensure that we excel in all we do, respect each other, welcome opportunities, enjoy challenges and celebrate success. I believe that through learning we all have the power to shape our own lives. As a staff and community we work hard to develop attributes of our young adults that will allow them to adapt in a rapidly changing world, to succeed in competitive environments and to value the qualities of others. Student achievement will always be at the top of our agenda. Without doubt, good exam results opens doors, changes lives and empowers pupils to achieve their dreams. I also believe that achievement comes in many forms and is a personal journey that should last a lifetime. A well-rounded education, participation in extracurricular activities and the willingness to try something new, are important life skills to attain. We encourage competition and co-operation through a huge programme of enrichment opportunities in order to give of our best at all times. Being a part of Schools Challenge Cymru we have further support to excel in creative arts, technology and sports.   We set high standards in terms of appearance and behaviour and have high expectations for all our students. Visitors often comment on the calm, purposeful and happy atmosphere around the school. If you are already a parent of a child at our school, thank you for sending your child to Heolddu. If you are considering making Heolddu your school of choice for your child’s education, I extend an open invitation to you to come and visit us, meet our children in their classrooms, see for yourself the quality of their learning experiences and talk to me about my vision for a school of which I am justifiably very proud.

About Us

Heolddu Comprehensive School is a secondary school in Bargoed, Caerphilly County Borough. The school overlooks Bargoed and is set in green surroundings near the Golf Club and the mountain road to Gelligaer. It is one of 14 secondary schools in Caerphilly LA. It is an 11-19 mixed school serving the areas of Bargoed, Gilfach, Aberbargoed, Deri, Brithdir and Tirphil and is increasingly attracting pupils from out of the catchment area, and nearly all pupils in the feeder primary schools attend Heolddu. The school recently installed a 3G Astroturf providing a first class training facility for the benefit of both the school and the wider community. We also host Bargoed Karate Club on a Thursday evening as well as enjoying a unique partnership with Bargoed Rugby Football Club. All pupils remain on-site throughout the school day. As a consequence there are a number of lunch time activities, including kickboxing, table tennis, scrabble, and a Christian Union group, as well as offering a broad mixture of academic workshops including ‘Open Art Surgery’ and ICT. In a full calendar there is even time for a maths week and a science week. The curriculum is enhanced by a number activities and educational visits off-site, which this year has included visits to Techniquest, @ (Bristol) and London theatres.
