Overview

The school was built shortly after the end of World War II to serve the needs of students on the emerging New Addington estate. Originally there were separate boys’ and girls’ schools which were later merged and then joined by a third school previously at Overbury. The buildings are spacious and bright, and are now undergoing an extensive programme of refurbishment for the benefit of students.

The dining hall, some science labs, student study areas and student services have already been upgraded, together with new windows and blinds in many of the class rooms, combined with the latest technology.  The school sits in a magnificent 33 acres of grounds and is surrounded by trees and fields. Points of interest especially to geography students are that the Greenwich meridian line passes right through the school and main playground, and that the school sits on the three-way boundary between Croydon Borough and Surrey and Kent Counties.

About us

Our school has been on a tremendous journey of progress and renewal over the last few years. Our predecessor school is long forgotten and our life as an academy has brought about rapid improvements. Most recently, we have moved our school into a new Multi Academy Trust, GLF Schools, which has ensured we can deliver outstanding standards even more consistently, through our combined commitment to excellence and innovation. Meridian High School is now successfully helping our students to become outstanding future leaders, equipped with the skills and qualities required to be successful 21st Century citizens.

I became the school’s Headteacher on 1st September 2014. From day one I have been instilling an unprecedented focus on standards of teaching, learning and progress. With my experience of senior leadership in the both the Harris Federation and other successful London schools, I am acutely aware of what needs to be done to continue raising our outcomes and most importantly, how to do it quickly. No stone is being left unturned in our relentless drive to further improve the school. I am deeply proud of what our students and staff have already achieved and remain as excited as ever about the future of our school and what the students will achieve in the years to come. We value and celebrate our wonderfully diverse community in an atmosphere of mutual learning and respect. We want all students to feel valued. We insist that, above all else, they feel safe and supported. It is important to us that they understand that personal responsibility; student leadership and student voice can have a powerful impact on school and community improvement. Meridian High School is set on a stunning 34 acre site on the Kent and Surrey borders. Uniquely, the global meridian line runs through the very centre of our school. We are exploiting this fact to develop student ambition and to position each of them to successfully take their place as proud British citizens in a global marketplace.

As a child, I grew up on a council estate on the outskirts of Dublin. I went to a fantastic high school that enabled me to see life beyond my own doorstep and to develop a belief that I could be ‘me’ and achieve personal success by following my dreams. I want all of our children to have the same wonderful high school experience I had and, as a result, develop the courage to follow their own dreams and ambitions. I am very proud to lead this school. Our intention is to provide insight into school life via our website, but to get a real understanding of how we are transforming lives you must visit us and see the school in action. If you require any further information regarding the school please feel free to contact us at any time. We welcome visits to the school throughout the year. If you would like to arrange a visit, especially if you think we could potentially be your Year 5 or Year 6 child’s high school, please contact Mrs Hickmott who will make arrangements for you. My staff and I genuinely look forward to welcoming you and your son/daughter to Meridian High School. Martin Giles, Headteacher.

Vision and Ethos

Our School is a family. That means, above all else, we help each other to learn, grow and improve: now and always.

We are driven by a very simple belief that everyone deserves a first class education. We have high aspirations for every member of our family and believe that everyone is capable of remarkable successes. We provide high quality, challenging and personalised education experiences to ensure that we all have every opportunity to develop as an exceptional leaders and contributors to society.

Meridian High School is a forward looking, and dynamic Academy. We believe education is about developing the whole person, helping learners to understand the many different branches of human knowledge, challenging them to think critically and encouraging a desire for truth and curiosity in life. We further believe that integrity, good manners, hard work, excellent behaviour and personal pride are vital educational tools. We believe in, and promote, traditional British values of:

•           Respect for all and the liberty of the individual

•           An understanding of the dignity of others

•           The freedom to make the most of one's talents

•           Respect for the institutions of democracy

•           The celebration of diverse cultural and religious beliefs

•           A just and fair society

Our dedicated staff is persistent in their commitment to ensuring that students benefit from a range of personalised opportunities inside and outside the classroom, designed to ensure that their achievements match our high expectations. We are driven to ensure that the students will move on to high-level apprenticeships, further education, universities (including those from the Russell Group), and successful careers.

School Motto

The School motto is: ‘Motivation, Honour, Success’.

Motivation

We drive students to develop their confidence, to be courageous, to take risks, to support them to try new things and to be successful with their learning. In return we expect them to develop as independent learners, to show resilience and have the determination to persist, even when things are difficult.

Honour

Students will be challenged and supported if they are not meeting our high expectations or if they disrespect their learning opportunities or the learning of others. Students are expected to be brave, to challenge themselves and have high aspirations. Students and staff are encouraged to challenge what they know is not true or fair and actively prevent discord. Above all every member our family is expected to uphold our values and to do so with pride.

Success

We set very high standards for all of our students – we will do whatever is needed to ensure each one can value and celebrate both their own and others achievements, with pride and with honour. Success for our students, however, can only come about with focused and dedicated hard work of all appropriate adults. Parents, carers and staff must work together, and with one voice, to bring about our belief, that striving for truth, integrity and success is the hallmark of education.
