Overview

Nottingham Nursery School and Training Centre has been judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and is a dynamic and forward looking organisation which is a great place to work.  We have a friendly, well-established and highly committed staff team who enjoy many benefits including: family friendly working practices, access to great CPD opportunities and a supportive senior team and governing body.  We opened in September 2008 in a bespoke building featuring a two story design with the nursery school occupying the ground floor and the training centre upstairs.

We are the only Local Authority maintained Nursery School in Nottingham and have a wonderfully diverse school community.  We admit up to 120 part-time and full-time children aged 2-4 in our maintained provision and have an additional 30 private day care places for children aged 3 months-5 years old.

Our facilities offer a fantastic working and learning environment.  The nursery school has been designed and built with Reggio Emilia principles in mind and we are fortunate to have extensive outdoor learning facilities including a well-developed forest school area.  All of our staff are all qualified and experienced teachers or practitioners and some are specially qualified and trained in leading outdoor activities such as fire building or pond dipping.

We place high value on offering children the chance to own their own learning and we nurture curiosity, awe and wonder; supporting children to become enthusiastic lifelong learners.  We encourage them to develop tenacity, creativity and self-regulation in order to help them take risks and develop to their fullest potential. We foster in children a strong sense of identity and well-being; of being connected with, and contributing to, their world; enabling them to be confident, involved learners; and effective communicators.

This school actively promotes the fundamental values of democracy.  These are interpreted for children of this age as: developing critical thinking; learning right from wrong; learning to take turns and share; making choices in their play; making shared decisions about resources and through clear boundaries of behaviour, and challenging negative views and stereotypes.  Children learn all about other people, their feelings, cultures and beliefs. We celebrate a range of festivals, cultural and geographical days throughout the year, where the children learn about the faiths, customs and clothes, food, dance and music and much more – often brilliantly supported by parents’ involvement.

We are focussed on bringing the best in evidence-based practice to inform all that we do in order to make our children’s education the best it can be.  We are looking for an enthusiastic, aspirational, creative and reflective early years’ practitioner to be part of our team.  If you think you would fit in well, we would love to hear from you.

About us

We want children who see the really tough problems as puzzles, and have the tenacity, the creative resources and the creative ability to solve these puzzles. Children will have a strong sense of identity and well-being; be connected with, and contribute to their world; be confident and involved learners; and be effective communicators. The Nottingham Nursery School & Training Centre opened in September 2008 in a bespoke building featuring a split-level design with the nursery school occupying the ground floor and the training centre upstairs.

We are the only Local Authority maintained Nursery School in the City and have no defined catchment. We are unique in that as a school we admit up to 126 children aged 3 – 4, and also admit up to 40 eligible 2 year olds. We offer before school childcare for children aged 2 – 6. Children are admitted in order from the waiting list. The extensive use of glass in the design gives the building a light and airy feel, and a bright and spacious reception leads through to a space for parents and to the classrooms at the rear of the building. The classrooms and training facilities are comfortable and well equipped for the demands of modern learning, development and care. An on-site kitchen provides freshly prepared meals for the children. All meals served are vegetarian and are of an excellent standard. The Kitchen has a hygiene rating of 5.  Children will also be offered a snack both morning and afternoon, which consists of fruit and carbohydrate, with a choice of milk or water. The 4 classrooms are large and link into each other. Each has an interactive whiteboard or e-board which is accessible to all children. There are toilets adjoining each classroom and we have nappy changing facilities. A large hall provides space for lunch and for large group activities such as parachute games, dancing or school celebrations and shows. There is an extensive, enclosed outdoor area with trees, grass, climbing equipment, sand pit, hard surface area for wheeled toys, different textured surfaces and a large covered area. There is also a large natural interactive area with gravel, pulleys and a super water play system. This area was created with Local Authority Early Years Capital Grant funding and offers very wet play! We also have an allotment, which has been recently refurbished, where the children grow vegetables which we harvest and eat. There are chickens, fish and a wild area for children to explore and learn about the outdoors. We provide outdoor clothes and boots for children to play outside whatever the weather.

In October 2016 our school was awarded the prestigious ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ Mark – Gold Award, in recognition of the outdoor and off-site opportunities which we offer our children (aged 2-4) and the work we do in terms of promoting learning outside of the classroom with other professionals.  We are very pleased about this as it offers us recognition of something which is an absolutely integral part of our provision and which research shows is vital to children’s development, well-being and learning.  We are now one of only 20 school in the UK to have this award and 1 of only 2 nursery schools. There is a magical space which has been developed as a ‘Forest School’ area (http://www.forestschools.com/). This has become our own woodland and orchard area. It has a fire pit and log store; an enclosed pond; living willow structures; a storytelling area; apple, pear and native deciduous trees and obstacles for children to climb and balance. The development has been funded by a grant through the Local Authority’s Early Years Innovation Fund and is continually evolving. Staff are specially qualified and trained in leading outdoor activities such as fire building or pond dipping.  Children have access to this area every week in all weathers. Connecting with nature and being outdoors has been proven to be an essential part of healthy child development.

All of our education staff are qualified and experienced teachers and childcare practitioners. They are trained in paediatric first aid and all staff hold current safeguarding certificates.  We are a Makaton friendly school with all staff trained to Foundation level. Makaton is a sign and symbol system, used alongside spoken language to support and accelerate natural language development. We are a very diverse school community and we love to celebrate this. We actively promotes the fundamental values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These are interpreted for children of this age, as learning right from wrong; learning to take turns and share; making choices in their play; making shared decisions about resources and through clear boundaries of behaviour, and challenging negative views and stereotypes. These values underpin our PSED curriculum, and through our social, moral, spiritual and cultural teaching, children develop an awareness and understanding of other people, their feelings, cultures and beliefs. We celebrate a range of festivals, cultural and geographical days throughout the year, where the children learn about the faiths, customs and clothes, food, dance and music and much more – often wonderfully supported by parents’ involvement.  Watch our video here

Our Mission Statement

Giving children the keys to their future

Inspiring Awe and Wonder

  • We plan for our children to experience moments of awe and wonder, inspiring in them a lifelong, enthusiastic and active love for learning.

Fostering curiosity, independence and creativity

  • We support our children to develop the capacity to direct their own learning both inside and outside of school. We foster curiosity, independence and creativity essential for this.
  • We encourage our children to ask questions and think freely about what interests them. We encourage them to develop and pursue their own learning interests and stimulate them with different ‘provocations’.
  • We provide lots of opportunities for children to develop creative ways of thinking and we deliver all aspects of the academic curriculum using creative and imaginative play-based strategies.

Developing active, resilient and aspirational learners

  • Our provision planning is underpinned by the EYFS curriculum. Across all areas of learning, we encourage our children to become active, resilient and aspirational in their learning.
  • We offer our children opportunities to explore, take managed risks and think about the choices they make. These developing skills build their character and equip them with a growing ability to achieve their goals both whilst they are with us and as they move on to the next stages of their lives.

Celebrating inclusivity, diversity and individuality

  • We take joy in celebrating the varied progress and achievements of everyone in our school community. We recognise that each person is an individual with their own unique set of strengths and strive to provide an environment where all strengths have chance to flourish.
  • We value inclusivity and the community we are part of, both within and beyond school.

We celebrate and embrace its wonderful diversity, with regular celebration days and community events.

Nurturing children, families and communities

  • Through our nursery promise, we strengthen our shared values and emphasise the importance of caring for and respecting others and the world around us; of being brave, trying our best and persevering in what we do.

  • We believe that collaborative, open and secure relationships between staff, children and families are fundamental to wellbeing and learning. We include the Leuven scales as part of our assessment of children’s development in order to help us focus on supporting wellbeing and engagement.
  • We know that working closely with families to nurture our children is key to early educational success. Families are a child’s first teacher and we engage in ongoing two- way information sharing with them in order to ensure that we are doing the very best we can for every child.
  • We work closely with other external agencies and community providers to make sure that our children are fully supported within school, whatever their needs are.
  • We build good links with local organisations and regularly welcome visitors into school or organise local trips which enable our children to see themselves as part of a wider community.
  • Learning outdoors and connecting with nature is key to our provision as evidence tells us that time spent in this way is critical for development of good mental health and wellbeing. It also provides great opportunities for children to learn naturally in noisy, messy, active and collaborative ways.

Maintaining excellence though collaborative, reflective practice

  • Our constantly evolving approach to learning, informed by the principles and approaches of Friederich Froebels, Danish Forest Schools and Reggio Emilia, successfully puts proven theory into practice.
  • Through high quality, collaborative and reflective practice we aim to provide exceptional teaching and learning within school. This enables every child to achieve their full potential, making excellent progress during their time with us.
  • As an outstanding school, we are pro-active about sharing our experience with other practitioners and we work closely with other schools and settings to support and develop their provision, sharing the principles of our practice more widely.
