About Us

St Nicholas Primary School is a small and friendly school located in a residential area close to Hull University. Pupils come from a diverse range of backgrounds from across the city of Hull.

Our school was built in 1897 for the children of the Sailors’ Families Society Orphanage, which was formerly situated on the site. We became a community school in 2007 after many years as a Voluntary Aided School. In August 2015 the school became an Academy. We have a reputation of being a caring school which was highlighted in our recent Ofsted report. It states that:

‘St Nicholas’ Primary School is a good school. It provides outstanding care and, by the time they leave, pupils have made outstanding headway in their personal development. Pupils get off to a good start in the Reception class and pupils’ overall achievement through the school is good.

The school’s leadership has a passionate vocation to ensure that every child matters. One parent said, reflecting the views of others, that this is ‘a happy, caring, friendly school that supports the “whole child” socially, academically and emotionally.’

We provide an excellent learning environment which includes 7 wonderful classrooms, a learning zone complete with numerous laptops and iPads, a music room, a library and an excellent outdoor area which includes a tyre park, 2 adventure trails and a MUGA (multi use games area.)

Our classes are organised into 7 single year group classes and we have an early admissions policy which admits pupils in the September of the year of their 5th birthday. We have a high level of teaching support in every classroom, helping to ensure that every child reaches his or her full potential.

St. Nicholas Primary School is a Academy school which admits children between the ages of 4 and 11 years of age. It is not affiliated to any religious denomination. We currently have 210 pupils on roll.

Our Aims

Our Motto is: A small school, with a big heart and a love for learning.

Our small school has a family ethos. It is rich, with many cultures joining together in mutual respect, trust and fairness. We have fostered strong community links at local, national and global levels and included a wide range of people, schools, businesses and professional bodies to help us ensure that learning is at the heart of all that we do.

Our big heart ensures that children and adults know they are cared for socially, morally, spiritually and emotionally. Safeguarding our children is of key importance. We do this with them so that they can access a curriculum that is challenging, broad and balanced. We all strive to: Be the Best We Can Be.

We want our children, staff and parents to love learning. This means we strive to ensure our teaching is of the highest quality across the school to ensure excellent learning behaviours. Our curriculum must; have high expectations; foster curiosity and engagement; provide vibrant and immersive environments that are relevant, broad and balanced.

Below you’ll find an outline of ours which will show you the educational model that we strive for:
