St. Philip’s is a simply superb place to learn, to teach, to work and to lead! The very best part of our school – the children! Our OFSTED report (March 2017) states that the, ‘pupils’ behaviour is exemplary; they listen to teachers’ instructions and are focused on their work in lessons.’ We also have a lot of fun too! Our inspector also commented that the school is, ‘a calm, well ordered and welcoming place to learn. High levels of concentration are sustained very well, even by the youngest children in nursery and reception.’

We have a school of which we are proud and in which we take pride! We strive for the highest possible standards and we achieve what we do because the children are happy and supported in school and because our team want the best for the children in their care. We have strong partnerships with our parish of St. Margaret Clitherow, the Diocese of Leeds and our Catholic Compass partnership of schools which together enhance our children’s experience of Catholic education as loving, caring, warm and welcoming.

Christ is the foundation and the very centre of our school community. Our Mission Statement is based on the word of Jesus as revealed to us in the Gospels.

Our Mission Statement is broken down into four discernible but not entirely discrete parts:

FAITH

‘Your light must shine before people so that they see the good things you do and praise the Father in heaven.’

We aim to give all our children the understanding and knowledge that they are unique and gifted individuals, unconditionally loved by God who will never turn away from them.

We aim to ensure that they will develop values and virtues that will enable them to be assured and confident young people who want to make a difference by serving others.

LEARNING AND ASPIRATION

‘Aspire not to have more but to be more.’ (Blessed Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador).

We want our children to find joy through learning life-skills which will have a positive impact on their lives and the lives of others.

As well as reaching high academic standards, we want our child to learn to question why things are as they are; understand and celebrate differences between us so they leave St. Philip’s with a compassionate attitude and a thirst for social justice.

COMMUNITY

We want our children to develop an understanding that we are part of our family, school, parish, local and global communities and that we share a responsibility towards, and a respect of, ourselves and the wider community seeking God in others and accepting difference.

This responsibility extends to the stewardship of our planet earth, given to us by God.

School Ethos Statement

The school was founded by and is part of the Catholic Church. The school is to be conducted as a Catholic School in accordance with the canon law and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, and in accordance with the Trust Deed of the Diocese of Leeds and in particular:

religious education is to be in accordance with the teachings, doctrines,

discipline and general and particular norms of the Catholic Church;

religious worship is to be in accordance with the rites, practices,

discipline and liturgical norms of the Catholic Church;

and at all times the school is to serve as a witness to the Catholic faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

• A mission is an important job that people are sent to do. At St Philip’s we believe our mission is:
• To help us realise that we all have gifts and talents and to help us use them so that we will do the best we can.
• To teach us lots of different subjects and help us prepare for high school and becoming adults.
• To teach us about Jesus, not just in R.E., but by being a part of this school, so that we can live like Jesus would want us to.
• To help us all grow closer to God.
• To help us realise that each and everyone of us is special and unique and so we should treat everyone as we would want to be treated.
• To be kind and caring to everyone in school – children and adults.
• To put as much effort into our work and play as we can so that we will do our very best in a safe and attractive building and where we have the chance to enjoy ourselves.
