We are a 136 place school that supports pupils with diagnosis of ASC, SLD, PMLD, SEBD. The Birches is a fun, forward thinking school that has communication at the heart of everything we do. We have a large staff team with a vast amount of experience of working with children and young people with learning difficulties. As well as teaching staff the school offers an onsite School Nurse, Physio team, Speech and Language Team, Sleep counselling team, Outreach programme and Occupational Therapy and sensory integration. All pupils have an Individual Educational Plan to support their learning which is supported by the curriculum. We invest in PE and Music based activities as key curriculum drivers. We have recently been accredited by the National Autistic Society – The first maintained school in Manchester to be accredited.

The Birches Specialist Support Primary School is an 'Outstanding' school (Ofsted June 2012), providing support for children with a range of learning needs, including Severe Learning Difficulties, Profound and Multiple leaning Difficulties, Autism Spectrum Condition and Social and Behavioural Difficulties. The school has expanded recently and will open a new extension in September 2014. As well as providing support to the children at The Birches, we also provide an outreach service for the schools of Central Manchester, offering advice and support.
