Vision, values and ethos

Vision

Our vision at The Rise School is to create a vibrant learning community and be an exemplar school of best practice for children and young people with autism and social communication needs by enabling our pupils to access a broad age-related curriculum.

We aim to achieve this vision by creating an environment where:

Pupils and adults are happy to come to school every day and are proud of what they achieve.

Parents and carers are confident that their children are safe, happy, making good progress and that their voices are heard.

All pupils are given the support and challenges they need to learn and succeed in the world beyond school – their quality of life is key.

All staff create consistently positive learning experiences that engage and challenge all our autistic pupils.

Values

Our values underpin all that we do at The Rise. They were chosen in a collaborative process that involved all our staff and pupils. We teach our values explicitly and celebrate them frequently.

Our values:

Be Kind

We demonstrate how giving and receiving kindness is important for everyone’s wellbeing.

Be Proud

Our pupils have much to be proud of and we want them to be strong advocates of themselves in their future lives.

Be Resilient

We know that our pupils will face challenges in their life, but we’re confident that, with the right strategies and attitude, they can flourish.

Ethos

The best way to convey The Rise School’s pupil-oriented and team-driven ethos is to hear from our staff directly. During a recent training day, our staff completed the sentence below in the following ways.

At The Rise School we:

  • are champion adults to our pupils
  • learn from each other and have fun
  • are a great team
  • take a positive and supportive approach
  • respect one another
  • are hard-working and resilient
  • are passionate and determined
  • acknowledge every achievement
  • create a safe and positive environment
  • are comforting, supportive and approachable.

Our School

The Rise School was opened in September 2014 under the government’s free school programme by the Ambitious about Autism Schools Trust, with the core purpose of preparing pupils for the next stages in their lives and for success beyond school.

We place equal priority on academic and social outcomes, with pupils gaining both the qualifications and the skill-set to successfully access further education or employment and to be full and active participants in society.

The Rise School is registered for pupils with autism aged 4-18 years and at full capacity has 130 pupils in primary, secondary and sixth form education.

Our primary and secondary curriculum is broadly similar to that offered by mainstream schools including subjects such as: English, maths, science, history, Personal Social Health Education/ citizenship, ICT, physical education and food technology. Pupils also attend swimming lessons once a week until year 10.

To meet our cohort’s needs, pupils access the school curriculum in small class groups of between 8-10 pupils. We also deliver weekly yoga and wellbeing sessions. We have a full-time Speech and Language Therapist and Occupational Therapist on the team.

The Rise School has great facilities including; fully equipped class rooms, fun outside playgrounds, a well-being garden, sensory rooms, soft-play rooms and a gym.

Our values are placed at the heart of our school community and are: Be Kind, Be Proud, Be Resilient.

Work with Us

Our mission is to transform the life chances of our pupils, providing them with the qualification, skills and experience to thrive beyond school. We genuinely balance their academic and social progress, having high expectations for both and we know that we need great staff to make this happen.

We are always on the lookout for talented staff who share our belief that our pupils can and will achieve great things.

Staff benefits and rewards

We hugely value the contribution of our staff and we care about their wellbeing and work life balance. The Rise School has a supportive and nurturing work environment with many benefits and rewards for staff:

  • We set reasonable deadlines in advance and are mindful about meetings.
  • We have a streamlined marking and feedback policy and “data drops” three times per year.
  • We have a popular Staff Secret Buddy scheme and invest in Friday wellbeing sessions. Previous sessions have included knitting, fitness, running, dance, cooking, relaxation and art.
  • Employees are enrolled on the Perkbox rewards scheme, in which you can access a wide range of benefits such as free mobile insurance, reduced price cinema tickets and discounts on a wide range of restaurants and shops.
  • Access to a pension scheme (including Local Government Pension Scheme and Teacher’s pension).

Development opportunities

We are school that invests hugely in staff development and have a wide range of development opportunities including:

  • A “say yes” approach to most requests for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and our Senior Leadership Team (SLT) actively source and share relevant CPD opportunities with staff.
  • Access to regular coaching from a qualified external coach.
  • A self-directed approach for some training slots where you can design your own programme of CPD from a “menu” of opportunities which include: online courses, workshops and use of our well stocked library – of which recommendations for new purchases are always welcome.
  • Access to valuable CPD for all staff in all roles: including First Aid qualifications, School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support coaches and Mental Health First Aid qualifications.

We also have a talent-spotting culture to identify and support teacher training opportunities. We have recently supported five members of staff (the majority of whom were previously Teaching Assistants) to achieve Qualified Teacher Staff status and have three staff currently training.
