Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to find out more about our school. Here at Torkington we believe that every child has their own individual talents, skills and abilities and our responsibility is to recognise and nurture their aspirations to be the very best they can be, in whatever area of the curriculum.

We have a growth mind-set culture at Torkington and this enables us to equip the children with the key life skills to allow them to meet new challenges with optimism and resilience. My colleagues and I share the philosophy that intelligence (including emotional intelligence) is expandable and not fixed. Our vision statement: nurturing potential, inspiring excellence, is central to all that underpins our work with the children. (The vision for the school’s future has unified staff, governors and parents. Aspirations are high. OFSTED2012)

As a school, we are committed to our own adult learning; we are a founder member of the Empower School Alliance which is centred on the Gatley Teaching School. Being a member of this alliance gives us the opportunity to work with other successful schools to share and develop outstanding practice. We are a strategic partner school for the North West1 Maths Hub and are one of the few schools in the North West that has adopted the “Singapore” maths teaching programme. All my colleagues have (or are about to have) completed nationally accredited leadership Programmes and I am an LLE (Local Leader of Education); all of which means that our school can be deployed to support other schools to improve.

About Us

Torkington is a Growth Mindset School. We adopted this in 2012.

Why the Growth Mindset?

When students and teachers have a growth mindset, they understand that intelligence can be developed. Students focus on improvement instead of worrying about how smart they are. They work hard to learn more and become smarter. Based on years of research by Stanford University’s Dr. Dweck, Lisa Blackwell Ph.D., and their colleagues, we know that students who learn this mindset show greater motivation in school, better grades, and higher test scores.

What does a Growth Mindset School look like?

Teachers collaborate with their colleagues and instructional leaders, rather than shut their classroom doors and fly solo. They strive to strengthen their own practice, rather than blame others. They truly believe that all students can learn and succeed - and show it.

Parents support their children’s learning both inside and outside the classroom. They partner with teachers, and respond to outreach. They worry less about advocating for their children to achieve good grades and focus on making sure their children are being challenged and putting in the effort needed to grow.

Students are enthusiastic, hard-working, persistent learners. They take charge over their own success.
