Overview

Westbourne is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school delivering excellence in education for 2 - 18 year olds.

Awarded 'excellent' in all five inspection categories by national school inspectorate, Estyn in 2018, we are immensely proud of our accredited approach to education and academic excellence which has seen Westbourne positioned as the #1 School across UK League Tables for results for the past four years.

Offering academic excellence coupled with strong pastoral care within a smaller, independent school setting, Westbourne School is located in the seaside town of Penarth, just minutes from the Welsh capital of Cardiff and voted one of the top ten places to live in the UK by The Sunday Times.

About Us

Westbourne has a first-class academic record at every level of entry – and prides itself on ensuring every student is challenged to achieve demanding targets and goals.

Established in 1896, our reputation for academic excellence has been established for over 120 years.

Students gain a distinctly global education in the safe, beautiful and affluent seaside community of Penarth, near Cardiff, which the Sunday Times ranks as one of the ‘Top 10 best places to live in the UK’.

At post-16, we have successfully offered the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme for Sixth Form students since 2008. Over two years, IB students are developed into well-rounded scholars who go on to the best universities in the UK and around the world.

Our results have been excellent, and our performances recognised by both league tables and official inspection reports.

However, some students take advantage of our Pre-IB course and are with us for longer than two years, which invariable aids their success in the Diploma.

The school has also been officially recognised as outstanding in the support provided for our students who enter the school with English as their second language. However, 72% of students are British, with the remainder coming from around 15 different countries with no one nationality dominating.

In 2018, half of our IB graduates scored at least 38 points (the minimum requirement for entry into Oxford University), which was an outstanding achievement. And this success is reflected in our consistently high level of attainment at GCSE, with students over the last five years obtaining over 55% A*-A grades.

Westbourne is a smaller independent school with approximately 250 students and an outstanding student-to-teacher ratio across the school of only 8:1, ensuring that all students get personalised attention from our exceptional teachers - 50% of whom have a PhD, MSc or MA and 50% of whom have taught internationally.
