Overview

Westbury School is one of the first  schools in Nottingham City to adopt the Fair Workload Charter. If you see a job advert with the Fair Workload Logo, that School has signed up to the Charter. This means that you can expect: a fair and reasonable workload high-quality training and professional development opportunities that meet the needs of individual members of staff a pay and rewards package at least that of the national agreement for teachers, and the Local Authority pay scale for support staff.

The Fair Workload Charter sets out what teachers and other staff can expect from the schools that sign up to participate. This includes adopting schemes such as the ‘five-minute lesson plan’ model and the marking policy clarifying what will and won’t be marked. Schools should also ensure teachers get access to Continuous Professional Development and that Teaching Assistants are supported to progress to Qualified Teacher Status where they choose to do so. About us

Westbury is an Academy that is part of the recently formed Raleigh Learning Trust. Westbury Academy is a local special school providing education for pupils who experience social, emotional and mental health difficulties.  Pupils are admitted to the school following completion of a process leading to an EHCP and with agreement that placement at the school is appropriate for their needs.  Places at Westbury are at a premium within this and other authorities, and there is often a waiting list for pupils requiring full-time educational provision.

The school is designated as a mixed school but currently has only boys on roll.  Pupils are aged between 7 and 16 with a total of 74 boys at present.  In line with Local Authority expansion plans for the school, this number will continue to rise and further accommodation is planned for in the near future. The school is subject to regular review of its performance and both previous inspections by OFSTED have resulted in judgements of good with outstanding features. The school has been judged consistently good since 2000. Pupils experience the full range of the National Curriculum at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4.  The school has developed a strong ethos around the Achievement Agenda, and over the last three years, has demonstrated year on year improvements at the end of Key Stage 2 and 3 assessments and considerable success at GCSE. The school is a National Support School and the Chief Executive Office of the Raleigh Learning Trust is a National Leader of Education designated by the National College for School Leadership. The school is an integral member of the Raleigh Trust and is also a partner in the Transform Teaching School Alliance. There has been significant investment in the school financially over the last four years. At the present moment the school is undergoing a significant expansion that will result in the school being able to accommodate a maximum of 120 pupils. This work will be completed by May of 2018.

The Curriculum resources are of a high quality and support the extensive curriculum development that has taken place during this period which has resulted in a variety of subject options, especially at Key Stage 4 being as relevant to pupils needs and interests.  The buildings are of a high standard, well-maintained and provide an outstanding learning environment.  There are well-equipped Food Technology, Science and Design Technology rooms and Vocational Education workshops supporting both vehicle technology and construction. Provision for vocational learning is judged to be outstanding.  The school has a full-sized Sports Hall on site and a small, well-equipped fitness suite.  This level of investment clearly demonstrates the school’s commitment to its ongoing development.

Ethos and Values

Statement of The Westbury Woodlands Federation Ethos and Values

The Westbury Woodlands Federation serves the needs of pupils within Nottingham City and beyond. Placing pupils at the heart of everything we do, we aim to guide and support them to be “the best they possibly can be.”

As a Federation we believe the following values are intrinsic to our work: honesty, openness, solidarity, equality, equity, self-help, self-responsibility, social responsibility, caring for and respecting others.

We believe that pupils should be exposed to a range of experiences in life and are committed to lifelong learning. We strive to ensure that barriers to progress are knocked down, be they emotional, financial or intellectual.

We aim to prepare students for the 21st century’s ever-changing employment landscape by making them independent individuals with adaptability and the will to succeed.

We are a learning institution as well as a teaching one, and we actively seek feedback and ideas to help our school to improve. Visitors to the schools often remark on how much they have changed over time – not just physically but in all aspects. In our striving for constant improvement we hope that visitors will always comment on how we rise to the challenges that we face in addressing the educational needs of all our pupils and see the value in our work.

We seek to reward not just academic progress but also improvements in behaviour and contributions to our lives in our schools. We strongly believe in rewarding the overwhelming majority of pupils who turn up every day and consistently try do the right thing. Our motto “Choice and Responsibility” is central to the work of our Federation.

We are Proud of our achievements and we constantly strive to improve further.
