Teachers are now much more confident in using educational technology (EdTech) than they were pre-pandemic, a new survey shows.
The findings from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Learning Technology reveals that two-thirds of teachers are now very or extremely confident in their EdTech abilities – an all-time high since the annual survey was first conducted seven years ago.
The confidence boost probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise given teachers were thrown into the deep end in March 2020, with lockdown forcing all teaching online.
While there were undoubtedly teething problems, 95% of teachers reported that they appreciated the benefits of EdTech, while 77% believe that tech will help them be more effective in their job post-pandemic.
However, more than half (57%) of teachers said they had to battle with a lack of student engagement with technology.
Coming out the other side of the pandemic, teachers are concerned about students’ social-emotional needs, with 57% of respondents expecting these needs to be heightened. But, 82% of teachers believe a well-crafted, fully integrated social-emotional learning (SEL) program would go a fair way to supporting students.
Commenting on the survey, HMH CEO Jack Lynch calls for a “best-of-both-worlds approach that fuses the power of technology with the tried-and-true social gathering of the classroom” moving forward – a complementary blend of “high-tech” and “high-touch”.
“Technology alone will not usher in education’s new era,” he added. “It is critical that we leverage digital solutions with a community-oriented, connected and human mindset.”
